10 Busted Over Kumasi Killings
POLICE IN Kumasi have arrested 11 persons in connection with recent killings in the Ashanti regional capital city at three different suburbs of the metropolis.
DCOP Augustine Gyening, Ashanti Regional Police Commander, said seven of the suspects believed to have shot and killed Kwadwo Asamoah alias Gawusu and his friend at Ash Town on May 8, 2013, were arrested from their separate hideouts by the police.
According to him, suspects Maama Lawal, 19, Abdul Aziz Illiasu, 17, and Mohammed Bello Gyimah, 58, were nabbed at Papa Mahama village near Subin in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region.
The police chief narrated that one Umar Farouk aka ‘Seaman’ who was part of the gang managed to escaped, but was later arrested at his hideout at Kumasi suburb of Mbroum on June 7, 2013, as a result of police intelligence.
DCOP Gyening said his outfit, on May 16, also arrested Sheila Boakye and Hadi Awudu, and later picked up one Yaw Boakye alias Aliki for being part of the shooting and killing of Gawusu.
“All the suspects have subsequently been sent to the Homicide Unit in Accra where they are currently in custody assisting with investigations,” the police commander disclosed.
He added that the regional command had again apprehended three other suspects in connection with Dichemso Jack City Pub incident on May 12, 2013, which led to the shooting to death of Prince Opoku Antoh, nephew of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Fredrick Fredua Antoh.
DCOP Gyening gave the names of the suspects as Yaw Wiafe aka Papa Yaw Azure, Joana Achemapong, and Mafus Saliu, 28.
He explained that Mafus was arrested at Dagomba line in Kumasi on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at about 5:30pm upon police surveillance.
He said effort was being made to arrest the remaining suspects mentioned in the case.
According to the police boss, the Aboabo-Akorem Neighbourhood Watch Committee also shot and killed a notorious armed robber by name Hakeem Mohammed during an encounter on June 4, this year.
In a related development, personnel of the Ashanti Regional Buffalo Unit have also arrested one Iddrisu Mohammed Suraj as a member of the robbery syndicate that attacked traders and travellers on the Kumasi-Tepa highway recently.
DCOP Gyening said the suspect mentioned Baba Musah, Wasuru Baba Sarichi, Issah Pozo and Richie as his accomplices during interrogation.
