Two men have been arrested at Pantan, near Adenta, for allegedly carrying fake Ghanaian currency notes which they used to make purchases.

Suspects Kwesi Sarpong, 29, a mason and kweku Akosa, 23, were arrested on Tuesday as they were found carrying five pieces of the fake currency notes of GH¢50 denomination.

The Adenta District Commander, DSP Stephen Kofi Ahiatafu said the two were arrested by residents of Pantan and handed over to the police after they had used one of the GH¢50 fake currency notes to purchase a sachet of water.

Upon interrogation by the police, the suspects confessed that one Mr. Kofi, master to Kwesi Sarpong of Haatso gave them the money to change for a fee.

The suspects said, on May 28, 2013, Mr. Kofi gave them five pieces of the GH¢50 note and told them that all the notes were fake and that they should exchange them for a fee.

They used the first note to buy a pair of jeans trousers valued GH¢8 and collected a change.

Suspects then proceeded to the provisions store to purchase a sachet of water, but the attendant quickly noticed that the money was fake and raised the alarm.

The remaining fake currency notes found in the pockets of the suspects would be used as exhibits to prosecute them in court.

Meanwhile, the remaining money would be sent to the Bank of Ghana to determine its authenticity, according to the police commander.
